How to Install Minecraft Mods

Mods are a powerful and exciting part of Minecraft. With mods you can add features and functionality that aren’t part of the regular, or “vanilla” game. Mods can do everything from adding new types of creatures and building blocks to the game, or even allow you to record and share videos made in-game.

The trick to mods, however, is getting them up and running. It’s not highly technical, but installing mods correctly does require a little knowledge. Fortunately, this guide will take you step-by-step through the entire process.

Step 1: Safety First

One of the most important things for you to keep in mind is the fact that there are many kinds of viruses on the internet that can affect your computer system so always be extra careful with the things that you download.

Finding some free Minecraft mods will instantly lead you to countless suspicious web pages so it’s highly recommended for you to only download the mods that have been uploaded to famous safe forums that are used by most people and avoid downloading mods from the strange web pages.

In most cases, you will find that the download links that you clicked on will lead you to an AdFly page which is perfectly fine for as long as you don’t click on the ads on those pages. What you need to do is to wait for a couple of seconds then click on the “Skip Ads” button to proceed with your downloads.

Step 2: Auto-updating Software

During the mod installation process, you will find that there will be times where you will need to run a program that you have just installed and finally quit before you can proceed to the next step. For instance, Minecraft Forge will not be able to be installed on your computer unless you have previously run the same version of Minecraft for at least once.

This is because if you have never run Minecraft before, then the mods folder will not be available on your computer. I consider this as a curse since the process of the installation requires a lot of mini halfway steps that could be confusing as well as a blessing because you don’t have to manually update the files by yourself in the future.

Step 3: Installing Minecraft Forge

To get Minecraft Forge on your computer, you will first need to download the latest version of Minecraft Forge here.

General Tutorial

Once you have downloaded the latest version of Minecraft Forge, you will need to right-click the files that you have downloaded and go to the “open with” section to open the file with Java. Then, click on the “install client” button and then click on “continue” to proceed with your installation. Once you have done that, the next thing that you need to do is to run the Minecraft launcher and then create a new profile by using the version that has the “Forge-” as well as the version that you have recently installed on your computer.

Once you have successfully installed Minecraft Forge on your computer, you need to launch Minecraft right away. Then, choose the Forge profile and click on the “Play” button once so that the mods folder will be created for you on your computer. After that, you only need to download the Minecraft mods folder followed by launching Minecraft and selecting the Forge profile to get a mod installed on your computer. Keep in mind that the mods installed on your computer will always stay active all the time.

Step 4: Searching the Mods Folder of Minecraft

For you to successfully install a certain mod properly, you will first need to search for the Minecraft mods folder. Follow these simple steps below to learn how to locate your Minecraft mods folder.

For Windows

If you are using Windows on your computer, then simply head to “Start”, then “Run”. After that, you will need to type in %appdata% into the location field of the Windows Explorer then double-click on Minecraft to get to your Minecraft mods folder.

For Mac

On the other hand, if you are using Mac on your computer, then simply click on your desktop and press the Command key followed by the Shift key and finally the G key. After that, type in ~/Library and then press the Enter key. Once you do that, you will be able to see a folder named “Application Support”. Click on it and finally click on “Minecraft”.

After that, inside the Minecraft folder, you will be able to locate your Minecraft mods file usually named “mods”. If you are unable to see one, then you will need to double-check your installation process to ensure that you have successfully installed Minecraft Forge properly and then you will also need to run it again. This is the folder that you will be using in the future to store all of your Minecraft mods that you have properly installed on your computer.

Minecraft Mod Examples

Flans Mod

For those of you who don’t know what the Flans Mod does, it provides a realistic option for the process of building an airplane. For you to install it to create a nice plane, follow these simple steps below to get started.

  • Step 1: Make sure that you have followed each step explained previously carefully and you have successfully located your Minecraft mod folder
  • Step 2: Download the Flans Mod-4.0.jar file from the link that has been provided above
  • Step 3: Drag or cut the Flans Mod-4.0.jar file and paste it onto the Minecraft mods folder
  • Step 4: Launch Minecraft and please make sure that the Flans mod can be found listed as one of the mods in the list of Mods, after that quit
  • Step 5: Go to your Minecraft folder and please make sure that you can locate your “Flan” folder on your computer
  • Step 6: Download the WW2 Pack as well as the Simple Parts Pack in the forum page of Flans and then drag or cut them to the “Flan” folder
  • Step 7: For you to see if the mod is working or not, launch Minecraft, open the inventory, click on the tab where it says “Flans Vehicles”, choose the type of airplane that you want, place your airplane in the world, and then try to use it. Explore through all the options available in the typical menu of the Minecraft control settings to find out what are the new options available
  • Step 8: Take a look at the Flan’s WW2 Pack Recipe as well as Lex’s Flans Mod Video to learn how you can craft an airplane by yourself from scratch

Just in case Minecraft crashes, that just means that you may have accidentally downloaded the wrong version of the mod or the wrong content packs for your current version of Minecraft. Everything should be working perfectly fine as all of the Minecraft components have been manually tested multiple times.

The Haribote Aircraft

This mod enables you to build airships and it is a replacement for the Zeppelin mod since that mod has not been updated yet in the Minecraft. The Haribote Aircraft mod works perfectly fine and is widely available in Minecraft 1.6.2 however the latest version of Minecraft is no longer 1.6.2 and to add insult to the pain, the website where you need to download the mod is in the Japanese language which consequently makes things more difficult to handle. The good news is that someone has made a clear tutorial video to explain how you can install it.

So basically some of the key points that you need to know here is that:

  • You will need to download two types of mod which are the HariboteAirCraft_162v3.zip as well as the YMTLib_162v3.zip to your Minecraft mods folder
  • If the latest version of Minecraft has still not been updated yet then you will have no choice but to use the Forge 1.6.2 or Minecraft 1.6.2
  • Keep in mind that during startup, mods may tend to crash when it is used with the wrong version of Minecraft or Minecraft Forge so for example, don’t use mods that are meant for Minecraft 1.6.2 with mods that are meant to be used for Minecraft 1.6.4

Let’s say that you have Minecraft 1.6.4 version only and you already have the same version of Minecraft Forge installed on your computer then follow the steps below to continue

  • Step 1: If you already have any Minecraft mods available, then start by first renaming your folder to “oldmods” to prevent any crashes during the game that could be caused by mixing the mods that are meant for Minecraft version 1.6.4 with mods that are meant for Minecraft version1.6.2
  • Step 2: Go ahead and launch your Minecraft (in this case) 1.6.2 for one time by double-clicking on the Minecraft launcher, then click on the “Edit Profile” button and choose (in this case) 1.6.2. After that, click done and then click on the “Play” button
  • Step 3: Download Minecraft Forge (in this case) 1.6.2 and install it on your computer
  • Step 4: Launch Minecraft once again and go to the “Edit Profile” section, choose Minecraft 1.6.2-Forge (in this case), followed by clicking on the “Done” button and then finally click “Play” button
  • Step 5: Download Minecraft Forge 1.6.2 and install it on your computer properly
  • Step 6: Run Minecraft one more time, go to the “Edit Profile” section, choose Minecraft-1.6.2 Forge and run it on your computer. During the first time that you do this step soon after you have successfully install Minecraft Forge, your computer will create the mods folder for Minecraft

After that, only then will you be able to move both of the mods mentioned previously into your Minecraft mods folder that you can find on your computer. Make sure that the mods are installed correctly: launch Minecraft, click on the “Mods” button, and you will see those two mods in the mods list.
